the poet:
Robert Southey (1774
to 1843) was born in Bristol, England. He was an English poet of
the Romantic School. He was a Poet Laureate of England from 1813 to 1843. Some
of his short poems like ‘The Scholar’. ‘The Battle of Blenheim’, ‘Bishop
Hatto’, ‘The Inchcape Rock’ etc. are very popular with the school children.
About
the poem:
The Inchcape Rock is a ballad- a song which tells a
story. The Inchcape Rock is a notorious sandstone reef about 18km off the east
coast of Scotland.
Robert Southey was inspired by the story took place in
14th century. The Abbot of Aberbrothok had placed the bell on the
Inchcape rock to warn mariners of impending danger during high tide. Sir Ralph
the Rover, a pirate, removed the bell. There is a conflict between two
qualities good versus evil. The poem is didactic in nature. The poem gives us
a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment. The poetic justice is there.The poet
avails supernatural elements to get the poetic effect.

In
the first stanza, the poet describes
the sea atmosphere. There was no movement in the air and the sea was calm. The
ship stood still as her sails were getting no thrust from the sky. Her keel was
steady and there was complete silence.
